Rotary brings together a global network of volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges.
Gold Coast Rotary recognises the right of all young people to have access to higher education and offers 2 scholarships to assist those students who have overcome adversity to complete their tertiary studies at the Gold Coast Campus of Griffith University.
ERNIE HICKS SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is a perpetual scholarship funded by the Rotary Club of Gold Coast and is awarded annually in accordance with the Club guidelines to a student who has fulfilled the selection criteria. The scholarship will be awarded to a person who has overcome significant personal adversity while achieving entrance to university, and who demonstrates a mature approach to study. The selection panel holds the right to not award the scholarship in any given year if in their opinion there is no worthy candidate.
The Ernie Hicks Memorial scholarship will be awarded to a student who has overcome significant personal adversity while achieving entrance to university, and who demonstrates a mature approach to study.
Value
Maximum value is $9,000, paid in instalments. Instalments of $1,500 are payable for each full time enrolled Trimester up to maximum value of the scholarship, or over three years, whichever is the lesser.
Payments are made within six weeks after the Census Date subject to satisfying scholarship Terms and Conditions.
To be eligible, applicants must:
- be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Humanitarian Visa Holder
- be a 2023 Year 12 school leaver (under 21 years of age)
- have applied for and be accepted to commence full-time study in Trimester 1 2024 in an undergraduate academic program at Griffith University
- be a permanent resident of the Gold Coast, Queensland and have completed Grade 12 at a Gold Coast High School
- be prepared to attend 2 Rotary Club of Gold Coast meetings per year to receive payment and update members on progress at Uni
Selection will be based on:
- Academic Merit
- Personal Statements addressing:
- Career goals and aims: Demonstrated mature approach to study.
- Challenge(s) experienced: How have you overcome significant personal adversity while achieving entry to Griffith University? (Non Covid Related)
- Include any volunteer work you have undertaken if any. This is not manditory.
Applicants must be available to be interviewed by the assessment panel

Terms and Conditions
To remain eligible for the scholarship, applicants will be required to:
- remain full-time enrolled at Griffith University
- maintain good academic standing at Griffith University with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 or above
- be prepared to attend meetings of the Rotary Club of Gold Coast (before each payment instalment; twice per year) and speak briefly at those meetings
- continue to meet all other eligibility requirements
The above conditions are verified each trimester at Census date. If a scholarship recipient fails to successfully meet these conditions, scholarship payments may be withheld, or the scholarship may be terminated.
The scholarship can be suspended or revoked by the Club should the recipient not meet these conditions or display conduct and behaviour on or off campus considered by the selection panel to be likely to bring disgrace upon the scholarship, the University or the Rotary Club.

Ken Baguley Bursary

The Ken Baguley Bursary was established to honour the founding President of the Club- Mr Ken Baguley. Ken Baguley, whose vision was to prepare young people for a complex world by providing maximum education opportunities and assistance to all students, but particularly to those in more difficult circumstances.
The Ken Baguley Scholarship is open to students studying full-time in their second year at Griffith University's Gold Coast campus in disciplines associated with business administration, management, accounting or hospitality.
Value
The Ken Baguley Bursary is valued at $3,000 payable in two $1,500 instalments for each full time enrolled semester over the course of 1 year.
Payments are made within six weeks after the Census Date subject to satisfying scholarship Terms and conditions.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:
- be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Humanitarian Visa Holder
- be a full-time student at Griffith University's Gold Coast campus, enrolled in a Business program majoring in disciplines associated with Business Administration, Management, Accounting or Hospitality
- have completed 80 credit points at Griffith University, Gold Coast campus, and be enrolled in their 2nd year of their academic program
- have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 or above. (A student whose GPA does not reflect their academic ability may provide a 250 word submission to this effect in the "Statements- Personal Statements- Is there anything else you would like to add?" section)
Selection Criteria
Selection will be based on:
- Personal Statements:
- Community involvement: What contributions have you or do you envisage you will make to the community?
- Scholarship benefit: How will the scholarship benefit you?
- Challenge(s) experienced: What are any difficult circumstances you are/have encountered?
- Is there anything else you would like to add? (Other Comments): provide a statement in this section if GPA is not above 5.0 as to why this is the case (optional)
- Supporting Documentation: Please provide a current CV (Curriculum Vitae) outlining the following criteria:
- Academic merit including awards
- Extracurricular activities
- Employment and work experience
- Community activities including volunteer work
Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview.

Terms and Conditions
Payment is made, after census, on confirmation the recipient is enrolled at Griffith University and still meets the eligibility requirements.
The recipient must be prepared to attend two meeting’s of the Rotary Club of Gold Coast and to speak briefly at both of these meetings about their progress at Uni.
Applications, including any supporting documentation, must be completed and submitted by the closing date.
